Day 1 is about obesity and maintaining a healthy weight. A PowerPoint presentation walks you through why so many people are overweight, information on poor nutrition habits, family genetics, what a calorie is, false diet advertising, healthy and weight. Students will use a formula to figure how many calories THEY should have each day to maintain their weight.

Day 2 is learning about carbohydrates and sugars. Students learn about "good" carbs like complex whole plant foods, and whole grains. Next, they compare whole grains with simple carbohydrates, like sugar. Students calculate how much sugar they are allowed to have per day according to their total calorie intake, and discuss Diabetes. There are optional videos as well.

Day 3: Experiment Day! Students rank how healthy they think products are in terms of "Saturated Fat" and "Sugar" from pictures on the PowerPoint show. Then they will pair up, get a product to measure either sugar or crisco in baggies, and then they walk around the room and fill in the correct teaspoons in everyone's product. Last, students will correct their answers and make some conclusions and fill in a lesson reflection.

The students mouths dropped with the visuals of the foods/drinks that they eat. We can teach them stats all day about nutrition, but when we connect them to what THEY eat and drink, it hits home. GREAT presentation!

I bought this primarily for the nutrition lab for my science class. This resource is not meant for general science teachers, but rather for health teachers. I wish the title hadn't emphasized "lab" because it really is more of a lecture.
