More Detailed Information About Each Sub Plan:

1. Body Systems Safari:

The “Body Systems Safari” introduces the “Big 5” animals that can be found on African safaris:
  1. Lion
  2. Leopard
  3. Rhino
  4. Elephant
  5. African Buffalo

It also includes the “Big 5 Body Systems”:
  1. Circulatory
  2. Respiratory
  3. Digestive
  4. Muscular
  5. Integumentary (Skin)

Most importantly, the “Body Systems Safari” activity was designed to be a self-advocacy skills-based activity.

Students will:

  • Research how to take care of each of the 5 body systems.
  • List ways a person can protect and strengthen each body system.
  • Advocate for their own health by identifying 3 personal ways they commit to protecting or strengthening each of their own 5 body systems.

Each body system includes 5 research links, where students will explore information about each system and, more importantly, discover ways to care for their own body systems. Internet access is required (unless you choose to print the online website material!). All links are included!

This can be done independently by students on Google Slides with clickable links!

2. The Dangers of Energy Drinks:

The "Teacher Directions" provide an overview of the activity and include a sheet for your sub with important details like student seating and roll-taking instructions.

Background articles on the dangers of energy drinks are provided for the teacher.

Students can now complete the entire lesson online using Google Slides, or the teacher can opt to print the materials for the sub to have ready for an emergency sub day. Full printing instructions are also included for the sub!

Students begin by taking the "How Healthy Are You Eating?" survey to engage with the lesson and assess their own eating habits.

Next, students read about the dangers of energy drinks, caffeine, and sugar.
Then, students work in pairs, using two excellent websites to chart the caffeine and sugar content in:

  • Energy drinks
  • Energy shots
  • Soda pop
  • Coffee
  • Tea

While working online reduces paper use, directions for printing the data from the websites are provided!

Lesson Follow-Up:

  • Last, student read the summary of several articles on the dangers of caffeine and sugar, and fill out a personal activity "Reflection."
  • 2022 "Caffeine and Sugar in Energy Drinks Worksheet Key" is provided.
  • Follow up with a "Grocery Store Scavenger Hunt" homework assignment
  • Links to 11 amazing videos!
  • Links to articles on real life tragedies due to energy drinks

3. Peer Pressures:

  • A section for your sub with helpful information, such as where your seating charts are located.
  • "Substitute Lesson Directions" that are editable, printable, and easy to teach, featuring real-life stories of youth who faced serious consequences after giving in to peer pressure.
  • Multiple video options on peer pressure and promoting positive teen traits.
  • Reusable "Student Directions" handout (students do not write on these, so they can be used year after year).
  • An introspective, fill-in-the-blank "Student Packet" with engaging activities like "Guess the Pressure Lines" and "Assertiveness" surveys.

Additional Highlights:

  • "Guess the Top 10 Peer Pressure Lines" survey!
  • "Assertiveness Survey" with analysis of results and student goal-setting.
  • "List of Ways to Improve Positive Self-Esteem."

Help your students recognize the character traits that empower them to rise above peer pressure.

Real quotes, like “No pressure, no diamonds” (Thomas Carlyle), will inspire them to stay strong under pressure and shine through adversity!

  • 5 optional video links on handling peer pressure and building teen self-confidence.

4. Communication Skills:

  1. Step-by-step instructions for your sub.
  2. A fun "Speaking/Listening Activity" where one student describes a picture, and the other attempts to draw it based solely on verbal cues! "Picture Diagram" included.
  3. Student Directions titled "Communications Activities Handout."
  4. Self-reflective "Assertiveness Survey."
  5. Tips for being "Too Passive" and being "Too Aggressive."

5. Overcoming Hardships: Motivating Articles:

This lesson resonates with all teenagers. It offers an inspiring look into the childhoods of 17 celebrities. If you work with or teach teens, this activity is perfect for you.

Students will be motivated to overcome their own challenges as they read these stories and share their thoughts with peers.

Celebrities include actor Jim Carrey—whose family once lived in a van; NFL player Shaquem Griffin—who had his hand amputated at age 4 but still became a pro football player; and singer Selena Gomez—who was raised by a teenage mother and navigated her rise to fame as a young artist. These celebrities each found unique and motivating ways to achieve success.

Created by a Master Teacher - This activity has been tested and loved by our 9th-grade students for years. It's always a favorite!

New, trending celebs – New celebrities and activities are added regularly.

Teachers can simply share the two links in this lesson, and students can complete the activity at home. Step-by-step student directions are included.

Recently added two new celebrities: Actor Henry Cavill (Superman, The Tudors, Mission Impossible) and Triple Grammy Award-Winning Singer Dua Lipa (who was once told by a teacher that she couldn’t sing!).

This resource is ideal for promoting social and emotional learning (SEL).

Modern, Authentic, and Beautiful Curriculum!

This curriculum is honestly such a breath of fresh air. I'm done struggling with health resources that feel dated, clunky, and just plain boring. What I love most is how authentic it feels. It doesn't talk down to students; it meets them exactly where they are with modern, real-world scenarios that actually matter to them. The design is absolutely beautiful. It’s clean, professional, and visually engaging, which makes a huge difference when I'm trying to keep a classroom’s attention. It feels like a high-end, living system rather than just another dusty textbook and it turns health class into a journey that students actually want to go on.

About time.

Finally curriculum that makes sense! Thorough, thoughtful, intuitive, with a beautiful layout. Easy to work from, and for me, the section on addiction is well worth the purchase alone. Highly recommend.

Clear, Easy to Understand, and FUN

This is my first experience using a HET curriculum, and I'm genuinely impressed. The course is thoughtfully designed with clear organization and and easy-to-follow layout, making the content highly accessible. Health can often be a challenging subject to both learn and teach, but this curriculum presents it in a way that is engaging and manageable for everyone involved. It creates an enjoyable experience for both instructors and students alike. I'm looking forward to starting the upcoming semester feeling confident, supported, and equipped with such a polished and effective resource.

This was a great resource and easy to use! Thank you!

This health resource was exactly what I needed for my high school students. It was age-appropriate, relevant, and sparked meaningful conversations. My students actually enjoyed the lesson—which says a lot!

Great Resource

I've been in the classroom teaching Sports Medicine the past 7 years after teaching 6 years of PE prior. I did not want to reinvent the wheel and middle school PE was the only level of PE I had not previously taught. This bundle has been extremely helpful in providing lead up activities and practice, along with games I'd never seen that are developmentally appropriate for MS.

Very helpful resource

This was a very helpful resource for a topic that is not always the easiest to teach, especially to students with disabilities who struggle to understand interpersonal relationships.

Excellent Resource!

Working at a small school with an inexperienced PE teacher, this tool helped guide planning for the year!

Wow. Wow. Wow.

I recently had the opportunity to explore the "Empathy Lessons for High School" unit, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! This social-emotional learning health unit is incredibly well-crafted, providing students with essential tools to understand and develop empathy in today’s diverse world. The lessons are engaging and relevant, encouraging students to reflect on their own experiences while also considering the perspectives of others. Activities such as role-playing and group discussions foster a safe environment for open dialogue, allowing students to connect on a deeper level.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I absolutely loved this resource! My students loved it and were engaged the whole time! I love the way it is set up, makes it very easy to follow and understand with little to no prep. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CURRICULUM!

User-Friendly & Professional

Thank you for taking the time to create a lesson that is very user-friendly and covers the heavy topic professionally.
