Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Lesson Plan
When we first came across the C.D.C.'s ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) survey, we felt compelled to create lesson plans to present it to our students. They truly responded to the survey, the “Protective Factors Worksheet,” and the art activities. It was amazing to see how these lessons motivated them to take ownership of their behaviors!

What You Should Know About ACE:
Did you know that having 4 or more of the 10 adverse childhood experiences (ACE) can significantly increase the risk for depression, substance abuse, low self-esteem, sexually transmitted diseases, obesity, and even early death?
The good news is that research shows protective factors can help children overcome the negative effects of childhood trauma. This is the core of the lessons I’ve developed.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study is one of the largest studies to assess how childhood maltreatment affects health and well-being later in life. With just a 10-question survey, students can determine their own ACE score. And, there’s hope—protective factors like strong relationships and stress management can help break the cycle of trauma and lead to better outcomes.
