Adverse Childhood Experiences + ACES Survey: High School Health Curriculum Health Lessons

When I read the C.D.C.'s ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) survey, I just had to write some lesson plans so I could present it to my students. My students really responded to the survey, the "Protective Factors Worksheet," and art activities; and I feel it really helped motivate them to take ownership of their behaviors.

Here's what buyers had to say about this impacting resource:

  • "Wow! Great resource!"
  • "A must have!"
  • "This is excellent!"

  • Did you know that having 4 or more of the 10 determined adverse childhood experiences puts you at increased risk for depression, alcoholism, substance abuse, low self-esteem, sexually transmitted diseases, obesity, and early death??!

  • The good news is that it's been shown that protective factors in a child's life can help them overcome the negative side effects of childhood trauma!! This idea is the heart of my lessons…

  • The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study is one of the largest investigations ever conducted to assess associations between childhood maltreatment and later-life health and well-being. There is a simple 10 question survey to determine childhood trauma. There is proof that protective and resilience factors can heal hurts and break the negative cycle.

  • Students are empowered to overcome childhood trauma and take control of their own destiny by choosing from a list of 31 protective factors that they have control over in their lives right now.

Here is what's included:

-25 pages of step-by-step teacher directions to help you with what to say

-A 65-slide PowerPoint slideshow to walk you through the lesson

-A pre-lesson includes a "Dysfunctional Family Survey," links to videos on co-dependence and family dysfunction, and a creative/educational poster project

-Next, students take the "ACES Survey," which is included in the PowerPoint slides

-THE GOOD NEWS: This is the heart of this ACE lesson!!! There are protective factors that can negate the adverse effects of hurtful childhood experiences!

-So, after students take the "ACES Survey" students use a "31 Protective Factors Worksheet" to discover factors that THEY have control over which can help them in life's hard times (things like handling stress, developing communication skills, and being appreciative!)

-Next students choose from 18 "Above the Influence" poster templates to create an "Overcoming Hardships" poster with their own unique protective factors (posters are included)

-There is an optional "Peer Support Check Off Calendar" to use

-There are also fun "Ad Slogans" that students can add to their "Above the Influence" posters!

-An "Art Rubric" is included to help students self-asses, or help teachers grade the art projects

  • This important lesson could be revised a bit to use for students as young as 4th grade...help them get these protective factors in their lives BEFORE they turn to risky behaviors!! Help your young students do something NOW, before they turn to negative coping mechanisms!!
